As the COVID-19 lockdown eased in 2021, More Mesa’s final “Treasure Hunt” post celebrated the land itself as the greatest treasure. Over 15 months, these hunts explored the mesa’s incredible biodiversity: native and invasive plants, birds like Peregrine Falcons and White-tailed Kites, insects, reptiles, and even human relics. Emphasis was placed on More Mesa’s five rare and distinct habitat types—Riparian Woodland, Oak Woodland, Wetlands, Coastal Bluff Scrub, and expansive Grasslands—all supporting complex ecosystems and designated as Environmentally Sensitive Habitat. The series ended with a reminder that More Mesa’s unique natural and historical legacy must be protected, as it remains “the last great place in Santa Barbara.”
