In 2023, the pendulum swung from drought to deluge, turning More Mesa’s vernal pool into a near-lake and reviving rare wetland life last seen in 2019. Though brittlebrush blooms were delayed by months of cold and rain, they finally emerged, welcoming bees and butterflies. Increased foot and bike traffic during the pandemic led to excessive trail-cutting and significant erosion, made worse when heavy fire trucks—responding not to fire, but a cliffside dog rescue—got stuck in the storm-soaked mud. Amid stunning Channel Island vistas and fragile, crumbling bluffs, the message was clear: leash your dogs, stay off unstable cliffs, and treat More Mesa with care.
